Steps to Properly Hitching Up Your Trailer
Proper hitching is vital for safe and effective trailer use. You should always employ the right strategy when you’re getting ready to take your trailer out on the road.
That’s why our team at The Outpost RV in Middlebury, IN works diligently to educate our customers on best practices when it comes to handling any of the trailers we provide. This hitching guide will teach you the right strategy for effectively prepping your trailer for travel.
1. Install Ball Mount/Hitch Head
With both hands, you should lift your ball mount/hitch head, align it, and then guide it into your trailer hitch receiver. This should come with one fluid motion and no resistance if done properly. Next, secure the inserted mount with your linchpin and ensure that it’s locked if applicable.
2. Align Trailer and Tow Vehicle
You should do this on level ground and ensure you have assistance or a backup camera to guide you. Once you’re in place, reverse your vehicle until your hitch ball is below your trailer coupler. Once your trailer and vehicle are aligned, cut your engine and put on the emergency brake before the next step.
3. Hitch Your Receiver
Ensure your coupler latch is fully opened and lower your trailer onto the hitch ball cautiously. Once you are able to close the latch, you can rest the full weight on your hitch ball. Lock the receiver latch and ensure that it is secure.
4. Apply Safety Gear
At this juncture, you should add whatever safety gear is needed such as breakaway cables, chains and emergency brake releases. These should keep your trailer from detaching from your vehicle in times of emergency.
